Most people want to age in their own home. Aging in place is a good way to age. Change is happening physically and mentally – moving sometimes compounds the upsettment of one’s life. However, to stay at home safely takes some time, effort and resources to meet your ever changing needs.
Here are a few things that can increase your safety and helping you age at home.
- Install Grab bars in the bath/shower areas
- Are there working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors?
- Are handrails on all stairways; are they needed in the hallways for balance?
- Check for tripping hazards re: worn carpets or carpets over carpets (throw rugs)
- Is the electric up to code?
- If you live in an area that gets snow, do you have someone to shovel and salt?
- Find transportation in your area if driving is an issue…either your local government or private car services
- Access social programs in your area through senior centers or religious organizations…social stimulation is the key to staying active and aging well!!
- Keep active and do what you always have loved to do…physical activity is very important in keeping in good physical shape.
- Keep Thinking…read newspapers and books or listen to books on tape…accessible from your local library!!
