A client had trouble walking a fell every once in a while. Medications were reviewed by his doctor and there were no tripping hazards. After weeks of wondering why this was still happening someone checked in the man’s shoes and there were socks stuffed in the toe part of the shoes which caused him to fall!!
Moral of the story is that everything should be checked !!!
Older adults who fall are at risk for severe injuries, death and reducing their life span. Still, many refuse to use assistive devices such as walkers and cling to their independence while increasing their risk of doing major damage and going to a nursing home.
Here are four simple ways one can reduce Fall risks especially for older adults.
- Participate in regular physical activity
- Remove tripping hazards
- Review medications with a health care provider
- Check your vision once a year
If someone does have issues walking they should have an evaluation by a Physical Therapist to be sure they have the most appropriate assistive device. Falls can be caused by a number of different things.
