September is National Falls Prevention Month — the perfect time for caregivers and families of seniors to learn more about the health risks of falling. With the frequency of Adults—especially seniors – falling, there should be information about preventing falls on a consistent basis throughout the year… not just for one month. Here are some tips to help families keep their loved one safe and minimize the risks of falls in the home:
- Do not have area rugs in the home – they are tripping hazards (even if they are tacked down)
- If someone is unsteady when walking they should be checked out medically
- Have a doctor prescribe a Physical Therapy evaluation
- Ensure the person is taking their medication correctly
- Are there tripping hazards in the home? Loose wires, extension cords, too much furniture?
- Are there handrails on all the staircases?
- Check for sufficient lighting
- Be sure there are grab bars in the shower as well as a shower chair and a safe way for the person to get into the shower area (transfer shower chair)
