high-temperature-98824_640As we head into the dog days of Summer and heat waves are more common, it’s good to know the warning signs of heat related illnesses, especially if you are a senior or are around seniors.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides descriptions and difference of Heat Stroke and Heat Exhaustion.  Muscle cramping might be the first sign of heat-related illness and may lead to heat exhaustion or stroke. When in doubt call 911.

Here are some Signs of Heat Exhaustion

What to Do if these Symptoms Occur

Heavy Seating Move to a cooler location 
Weakness Lie down and loosen your clothing
Cold, pale and clammy skin Apply cool, wet cloths to as much of your body as possible
Fast, weak pulse Sip water 
Nausea or vomiting If the symptoms continue seek medical attention immediately 
Fainting

High body temperature Call 911 immediately 
Hot, red, dry or moist skin Move the person to a cooler environment 
Rapid and strong pulse Reduce the person’s temperature with cool cloths or even a bath 
Possible unconsciousness Do NOT Give Fluids
